Israel bakes his own bread

The Helfands' 1850 farmstead is the backdrop for all onsite programs. At the end of a gravel road it is a piece of the bygone era, peaceful and rugged. Their home is re-sided with boards of wood milled from their own trees (which also opened up their wilderness for camping), clear stained to glow in the sunlight, complete with "new-to-us" exterior windows and doors. Their kitchen has homemade cabinets and butcher block counters made from oak cut and dried for three years before using.

The Farm Experience Cathie and Israel moved to Vermont in 1993 to raise their children and live a homesteading lifestyle. Now that the children are grown, they do most of the farm chores themselves. Today, Israel and Cathie raise organic chickens for eggs and meat, make a great chicken sausage, and raise lambs and angus beef... all organic. Three vegetable gardens round out the diet with farm fresh produce and canned goods for the long Vermont winter.
